Moaning about gaining page rank

I really dont understand how Google operates, I have a web site its not really very good and my aim with it is no more than for me to be returned in a Google search. My site is registered with Google and most other search engines and is listed, but whenever I search for me - Nathan (or Nate) Allen Bristol England UK (whatever combination really) I dont seem to be returned by Google. I am easily found by Yahoo, Ask etc but Google, no hope.

I firmly believe this to be a page rank thing and to do with external links from other sites, desperation drives me to setup a blog in the vain hope that the links to Nate Allens silly jokes and rambles in this site will help in some way.
